Public Health Careers Night – Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
6pm – 9pm
1030 Upper James, Hamilton, ON, L9C 6X6
There is a high level of interest among IMDs in working in the field of public health. Join us for Public Health Careers Night to hear the stories of three internationally educated healthcare professionals (IEHPs) working in public health in the local area – learn more about paths to working in the field, competencies of public health professionals and the Canadian public health system and unlock the secrets to successfully entering this field as an IEHP.
Speakers:
Sylvere Baranseta: Sylvere is an IMD who joined the Career Transitions program at SISO, and has recently started working as a Health Promotion Officer for Youth & Families with the Centre de Santé (Francophone health centre). He will talk about his own experience and career path, and share some information about the public health services he is involved in delivering to Francophone clients in the Hamilton/Niagara area.
Roodhaba Alvi: Roodhaba is an IMD working as South Asian Women’s Health Educator with the City of Hamilton. She will share her own experiences and career path, as well as information about the services she is involved in delivering with the City of Hamilton.
Sam Abisaab: Sam is an internationally educated public health professional working as the Kitchener area Mission Specialist for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (HSFO). Sam will speak to us about public health services in Canada; competencies expected of PH professionals; job opportunities in not for profit and charity; and share his personal story with real-life examples

Tour of CareImaging Cancer Clinic – December (details TBA)
We have been in contact with Dr. Deepak Tripathi of the CareImaging Cancer Clinic in Mississauga. They are a private clinic which carries out PET scans to diagnose such disorders as cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s and are growing very rapidly.
Dr. Tripathi is an international medical doctor who has been working with CareImaging as a technician and in a physician outreach capacity – educating physicians about the uses and benefits of PET technology. He has invited us to visit the clinic for a tour, to observe the clinic and its services and ask some questions about working in the field.
CareImaging is interested in hiring more technicians who have nuclear imaging training and experience, here or in another country.
I think this will be a good educational opportunity and a link to a potential employer; I would like to set up a tour sometime during the month of December. Please let me know if you are interested and if enough people would like to join me, we can arrange a date/time (weekdays).
