CPHA's CIII-2 Canadian consultants help global immunization efforts (reviewed June 12, 2008) Ongoing Requirements
The Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) has been contracted by the Government of Canada to implement the technical assistance component of the Canadian International Immunization Initiative (CIII), which is now in its second phase. Through this Initiative, CPHA identifies and recruits Canadian technical consultants to assist the World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to establish and maintain successful national childhood immunization systems in developing countries and in Eastern and Central Europe. Through technical cooperation and skill and service training, CIII-2 aims to increase the capacity of health-care related staff in infectious disease surveillance and control and in vaccination safety. The program places special emphasis on strengthening laboratory capacity for measles, rubella and other vaccine-preventable diseases and on working with partners to address gender needs in primary health care services related to immunization. It also works to promote the benefits of global immunization to the Canadian public.

Canada Institute for Health Information - Ongoing Requirement (reviewed June 12, 2008)

Community Health Research Unit (reviewed June 12, 2008)
This Health System-Linked Research Unit was established in 1989 and is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health, co-sponsored by the University of Ottawa (Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine and the School of Nursing) and the former Ottawa -Carleton Health Department, now the City of Ottawa People Services. Initially, investigators and research associates at the CHRU came from both the University of Ottawa and the City of Ottawa. Over the years, investigators and research associates from other institutions have also contributed to the work of CHRU.

Disaster Management with the Canadian Red Cross (added Mar 1, 2008)
Every year, Disaster Management volunteers assist thousands of people affected by emergencies and disasters - from a fire in a single family home, to a flood or storm that has disrupted the lives of individuals and the economy of entire regions. The Disaster Management Team of the Canadian Red Cross Ottawa Branch is looking for volunteers for various positions (Responders, Instructors, Public Education Presenters, Translators) to assist in the Ottawa Region.

Community and Emergency Response Team (CERT) (updated Mar 1, 2008)
The Crisis Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a division of the Salvation Army, a non-profit Christian based organization. The program is rapidly growing and actively seeking volunteers to join their response team.

CERT has been involved in many devastating events across North America - and every day CERT is on call by the city of Ottawa. CERT is partnered with the Red Cross as well as the Ottawa Fire Department and highly regarded by the OPP.

CERT is looking for mature individuals who can conduct themselves in a composed and compassionate manner during a crisis. Candidates are asked to pass a police background check and attend a six week training program. For additional information see link to Job description >>

The Heart and Stroke Foundation, a volunteer-based health charity, leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact through the advancement of research and its application, the promotion of healthy living and advocacy. Birth and Parent Companion Program (BPCP) (reviewed Mar 1, 2008)
What is the BPCP? A multifaceted prenatal and parenting support program that improves the health and well-being of mothers and their children in the Ottawa area. Every year in our community, socially, financially and culturally isolated women become mothers. Some of these women have partners, most do not, and all are "at risk" for experiencing difficulties in parenting.The BPCP provides support through four main avenues: Birth Companions, Parent Companions, Breastfeeding support, and The Network.

Birth Companions are trained by program staff to provide emotional, informational, and physical support and companionship to expectant mothers as they prepare for their babies, during labour and birth, and in the postpartum period. Birth Companions attend prenatal classes and medical appointments, give prenatal education, provide community resource information, support breastfeeding and early baby care helping mom’s transition into their new roles.

Humber College

Post Grad Clinical Research

This graduate certificate program, which is offered by School of Health Sciences at Humber College was developed in response to a growing need in the health industries (pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical devices companies, research institutes and hospitals) involved in development of new drugs and therapies. The program is dedicated to train students in conducting clinical trials, which means conducting experiments on humans with new drugs/therapies before these are introduced to the market.
 
NOTE:  This program is 1 year in length with 3 months internship.  Classes must be in attended at Humber College in Toronto, but there is a good possibility of working the ‘internship’ in Ottawa.  Call Karin at (613) 233-0453   Ext 304 to discuss some of the details.

Post Grad Regulatory Affairs

Regulatory affairs professionals help businesses ensure that product development, manufacturing and marketing practices meet or exceed government requirements. Developed in response to a growing need in the health and food industries, the Regulatory Affairs program provides graduates with the specialized knowledge required to help biotechnology, medical device, pharmaceutical and food companies manage regulatory processes.
