3.4 Professional Associations and Colleges: An Introduction

Some healthcare jobs in Ontario are governed by professional groups and colleges. These organizations monitor people working in their professions and also set standards of practice.

Most healthcare professions have associations that provide professional development programs, training, information and advice. Their purpose is to ensure that members of their profession meet the standards of education needed to practice in their field. To become a member of one of these associations, it is customary that exams be taken. Members also have to maintain their good standing in the organization by staying up to date on changes in practice and by renewing certifications from time to time. In some professions, members must be enrolled with both a college and a professional association.
